What is Anxiety?

Occasional anxiety is a normal part of life, especially when facing certain stressful situations from time to time.   Individuals with an anxiety disorder, however, frequently experience intense, excessive and constant fear and worry about everyday situations. Anxiety disorders typically are difficult to control and often interfere with your ability to function at home, work, school, and/ or socially.

Common Symptoms may include:

  • Feeling nervous, anxious, or excessively worried
  • Difficulty controlling worry
  • Feeling restless or on edge
  • Experiencing muscle tension or difficulty relaxing
  • Trouble concentrating or experiencing brain fogs
  • Irritability
  • Having trouble sleeping
  • Having a sense of impending danger, panic or doom
  • Having an increased heart rate
  • Breathing rapidly (hyperventilation)
  • Sweating
  • Trembling or shaking
  • Feeling faint or dizzy
  • Nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea
  • Avoidant behavior especially towards things that trigger anxiety

How is anxiety treated?

Common treatment methods may include psychotherapy (i.e., cognitive behavioral therapy), psychoeducation (i.e., coping skills & techniques, self-care), & medication (i.e., Zoloft, Effexor, Buspar).
