What is Major depression?

Depression, or major depressive disorder, is a common but serious condition that causes persistent feelings of sadness, hopelessness, and loss of interest. It can impair your ability think, feel, and care for yourself (i.e. sleeping, eating, or working)  and sometimes individuals may feel that life isn't worth living. 

Common symptoms may include:

  • Depressed mood, such as feeling sad, hopeless or tearful  
  • Loss of interest or pleasure in things you once enjoyed (i.e., hobbies, sex) 
  • Significant weight loss or weight gain  
  • Decreased or increased appetite 
  • Trouble falling or staying asleep 
  • Restlessness or slowed behavior 
  • Fatigue or loss of energy 
  • Feelings of worthlessness or excessive or inappropriate guilt 
  • Problems thinking or concentrating, or indecisiveness 
  • Anxiousness 
  • Irritability
  • Recurrent thoughts of death, suicidal ideation, a specific plan for completing suicide or suicide attempt.

How is Major depression treated?

Common treatment methods may include psychotherapy (i.e., cognitive behavioral therapy), psychoeducation (i.e., coping skills & techniques, self-care), & medications (i.e., Zoloft, Wellbutrin, Cymbalta).
